Texas Instruments supports and maintains Linux and Android on WiLink 8. This slide provides the software roadmap. TI is pushing everything towards mainline Linux, the associated supported platforms can be seen. There are both TI and non-TI platforms, for example the Freescale i.MX6. The main effort is to make sure all drivers are on mainline and it is easy to port WiLink 8 to other Linux based platforms. Integrating the Linux Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers for WiLink 8 has become even easier as they have now been moved upstream to mainline Linux. Starting with kernel 4.1, the drivers can now be built as part of the standard kernel build rather than as part of TI’s tree build. An additional benefit for the user if they are using older kernels, in particular on non-TI processors, is that it provides a reference implementation of the device tree files and drivers that will help identify what needs to be backported into their own kernel. With this any board that is supported by the mainline kernel and has working SDIO and UART, and has a physical interface for mounting a WiLink 8 module, needs only the device tree file addition for enabling WiLink 8.
