Also, where some synchronization is required between more than one node in the network, not only the absolute delay but the unit-unit, packet-packet, or power-up to power-up variation in this delay can be critical. A simple example would be a positioning system for an industrial robot.  If the data packets updating the motors controlling the X-Y-Z dimensions are not perfectly synchronized then the exact position in 3-dimensional space will have a ‘jitter’ component that defines the accuracy of the system.
