Semiconductor processors run computers and determine the speed at which they process information. In other words, the heart of the computer is the semiconductor processor or microprocessor. Its clock produces the digital pulses that determine the speed at which information is processed in a computer. A processor running at 2 GHz has its clock producing 2 billion pulses per second. The more pulses, the faster computers will process information. Therefore, there is a continued push to make computers faster and faster by using semiconductor processors with higher clock rates.
