The wide input voltage range capabilities of the RECOM R-78 series buck regulators are ideal for use with larger batteries and multi-cell systems, where the voltage supplied to the converter may vary, but a constant output voltage is required. The R-78S boost regulator from RECOM was specifically designed to be used with single cell batteries. 3 V coin cells are an inexpensive and reliable solution. A fully charged button cell provides approximately 3.2 V, but after a few hours of operation the voltage starts to decrease to 2.7 V – 2.85 V. This lower input voltage can cause problems in devices powered by typical solutions. In radio modules such as WiFi, Bluetooth and LoRaWAN, the range will be restricted and transmission will be disturbed. The R-78S can provide a steady 3.3 V output with an input as low as 0.65 V.
