Modern systems and intelligent applications are equipped with many more features and communication interfaces. A key point to this development is the change in control structure that will assign a more autonomous role to the sensors so they will be able to communicate directly with each other. Another important aspect is the implementation of a local power supply or even a power supply-free solution which will allow the sensors to be more flexible in mounting and spatial location. However, a local or free power supply solution has its own set of challenges, such as the need for an extensive battery life and the reduction of sensor application standby power consumption. More intelligent sensors will also have higher power consumption than their analog ancestors due to wireless signal transmission units. Another focal point is the concept of energy harvesting; a technology that provides sensors with minimal currents gained from environmental sources, providing sufficient energy to run the sensor application.
