In summary, NXP’s SPI Flash Interface, known as “SPIFI” is a unique IP implemented on NXP’s Cortex-M line of microcontrollers. With SPIFI, the user can attach a small serial flash with high density non-volatile memory to increase the memory scalability of the end application. Due to its small package size and low I/O count, serial flash offers benefits over traditional NAND/NOR flash, plus it provides high speed access. SPIFI enables reducing the size of a PCB by eliminating large parallel flash devices. Application software runs efficiently on the Cortex device with instructions being fetched directly from serial flash. An improvement in design efficiency are realized as critical sections of code can be transferred to internal SRAM for execution at the CPU’s highest clock rate.
