Execution
In the example shown on this slide, the designer has chosen to utilize a quad SPI flash device for both data storage and for code storage or execution. SPIFI enables this design to effectively reduce the size of the PCB by eliminating large parallel flash devices. Application software can run efficiently on the Cortex-M4 with instructions being fetched directly from serial flash. Critical sections of code might be transferred to internal SRAM for execution at the CPU’s highest clock rate, resulting in an overall improvement in design efficiency.
