The two types of TVS diode arrays discussed operate in a similar fashion in response to an ESD event. Both will only turn on or activate during an ESD or overvoltage event higher than the turn-on or stand off voltage and otherwise sit on the data line not disturbing normal operation. These parameters will be discussed shortly. The drawing shown here illustrates that when an ESD event comes along the protection component activates at some level just above the normal operating voltage to clamp the transient before it causes damage to the IC. The protection component will continue to clamp at this level until the threat has subsided. In reality the clamping voltage wave shape more closely resembles the ESD wave shape due to the varying levels of current being injected versus time; however, this simplistic graphic still exhibits the region the protection device is meant to operate.
