The IEC61000-4-2 standard addresses ESD events seen in the field or at the system level. As shown in the schematic, a 330 Ohm resistor is used to discharge the capacitor so the currents injected into the device being tested are much higher than the previous MIL-STD model. All manufacturers of electronic equipment will use this ESD standard to evaluate their devices so in most all cases IC’s will require external ESD protection as the currents in this model are more than five times greater than the previously discussed.
