There is one last point to make about dynamic resistance. When comparing different ESD protection technologies such as polymer and MLV or multi layer varistors, silicon will always give the lowest RDYN. The graph here shows the resulting clamping voltage of the Littelfuse SP1003 series discrete TVS diode versus a competitive varistor. Both components have the same reverse standoff voltage, footprint or size, and similar capacitance so in other words the datasheets would have indicated that both devices were equivalent. However, the graph shown here tells a different story and illustrates that the peak and clamp voltage of the SP1003 was significantly lower than that of the varistor. This difference can mostly be attributed to the lower dynamic resistance that silicon provides.
