To recap, the two main standards for evaluating resistibility to ESD are the Human Body Model or MIL-STD 883 and the IEC61000-4-2. The IEC specification is intended to address ESD concerns seen in the field where as the other model is strictly intended for the manufacturing environment. Comparing the two standards at 8kV shows an almost six fold increase in current and highlights the need for ESD protection beyond what is built into the IC.
