eMMC is a Managed NAND device. It is a trademark of JEDEC and MMCA which stands for Multi Media Card Association. eMMC device contains NAND flash memory and an embedded eMMC controller chip – all inside one package. Some of the main advantages of using eMMC: It can be used as a Boot option: main target is code execution as more code-type of content are moving from NOR to eMMC. NOR will possibly be used for critical functions, to store essential pieces of software, like the boot loader or other important system parameters, where high reliability and performance are a must-have. With eMMC, there is no need of external NAND management like bad block, wear leveling, and garbage collection. It offers High speed DDR option with a maximum data rate of up to 400 MegaBytes per second. eMMC uses Low power-supply and has low I/O pin count which provides cost benefits for package, pcb and wiring. It offers a broad density range – low density for code storage and high density for code and data storage or only data storage. eMMC specification is a standard specification developed by MMCA and JEDEC. eMMC is designed for a wide range of applications in consumer, industrial and automotive applications including navigation, infotainment, telematics, industrial and other medical uses.
