Why should the air be replaced? Air is a poor thermal conductor, with thermal conductivity of only 0.026 W/m*K. TIM materials have thermal conductivity nearly 20 times higher than air, or greater than 0.5 W/m*K. The other function of a TIM is to minimize thermal resistance to the hot surface by maximizing wetting and surface area.
