Active voltage balancing circuits continually monitor and adjust the voltage across each capacitor to maintain accurate voltage balancing. These circuits provide rapid voltage balancing with only a small amount of additional leakage current, typically only a few micro Amps. This makes active voltage balancing ideal for battery powered applications that require low leakage current. It is also commonly used when larger capacitance values are involved, as leakage current increases with capacitance value resulting in the need for very low value balancing resistors when a passive system is employed.
