The XB-D LED leverages the latest generation of Cree’s silicon carbide based LED technology for the best performance, best reliability, and most secure supply of components. Cree’s silicon carbide substrate LEDs deliver better performance than sapphire substrate LEDs. Compared to sapphire, silicon carbide produces fewer dislocations which results in more photons and thus more light. Silicon carbide also provides better index matching between the LED gallium nitride semiconductor material and the substrate which results in more light extraction, providing a 5-10% efficacy advantage. In addition, silicon carbide based LEDs produce less epi defects which results in fewer LED failures and better manufacturing yields compared to the competition. Cree is a vertically integrated wafer and chip supplier.
