The SOA is expressed by a graph in the MOSFETs datasheet which advises the user what combinations of load current and voltage drop are acceptable for what period of time. A MOSFET that cannot be maintained in this area will be destroyed or suffer significant damage. Therefore, a MOSFET should be chosen that will allow the time required to charge up the load in normal power up conditions and also still maintain SOA requirements.
