Three Reasons to Use FPGAs in Industrial Designs Slide 3
There are many factors driving the adoption of FPGAs in embedded industrial designs. There is demand for lower-cost and more easily managed networks in factories. FPGAs offer the flexibility to support industrial networking requirements, such as multiple Industrial Ethernet or fieldbus protocols on a single platform and to adapt to changing protocol standards, at any time. Manufacturers also want to maximize performance and energy efficiency with intelligent motor and motion controllers and drives. Hardware acceleration with IP functions like DSP blocks, embedded processors, and system integration on the FPGA assist with finer motor and motion control. By 2016, more than 70% of drive and motion control systems worldwide need to be functionally safe per the IEC-61508 specification, especially for shipments into Europe by 2012. Safety must be an integral part of industrial designs today. Another trend is in the area of video surveillance cameras, which are becoming smarter with the rise of wide dynamic range (WDR) sensors that approximate the sensitivity of the human eye. Currently, such WDR sensor interfaces, the sensor processing pipeline (ISP), and processing performance can only be accomplished with an FPGA. Even DSP devices will require an FPGA to interface to WDR cameras.
