As shown on this slide, the standard application circuit uses a minimum set of additional components in order to operate the motor. The VCC_IO voltage can be supplied from 5VOUT, or from an external source such as a low drop 3.3 V regulator. In order to minimize linear voltage regulator power dissipation of the internal 5 V regulator in applications where VM is high, a different (lower) supply voltage can be used for VSA. Dimensioning of sense resistors and clock source is discussed on the following slides. In case VCC_IO is driven by an external source (rather than by 5VOUT), precautions have to be taken for a safe power-up state (VCC_IO must come up in parallel with VM).
