SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC3000 Slide 6
Shown on this slide are some of the CC3000’s specifications. The Wi-Fi supported standards are 802.11 b and g. The CC3000 can serve as a station (as opposed to an access point). The device has good receive and transmit specs, which means that the device can achieve a longer range. To put this in perspective, a WiFi device (from other suppliers) with +12 dBm does not suffice for a Wi-Fi transmitter when the user wants to reach every room of a large house. The security features are important to notice as well; there are WEP, WPA, and WPA2 (Personal) security, which are the ones typically used in the home with an access point. Some small business, enterprise, or industrial applications are well suited for WPA2 personal security as well. The CC3000 does not support WPA2 Enterprise. The big feature to note about the CC3000 is its embedded software. There is network software embedded in the CC3000 like the TCP/IP stack, Wi-Fi driver, and security supplicant. The interface to host microcontrollers such as the MSP430 or Stellaris, is an SPI. Additionally, the CC3000 has two power modes, active and shutdown. Note that when in the  shutdown mode the device disconnects from the network. Because the software is embedded on the CC3000, only an additional 2 kB of flash and 250 Bytes of RAM are needed to run the required code, enabling many different host controllers to pair with the CC3000. Lastly, it is possible to have up to four different UDP or TCP sockets opened simultaneously.
