The output voltage also varies over load transient, or fast changes in the load. This is analogous to the FPGA changing from a standby state to a high active state. In this case, the current is changed abruptly from zero to 3 A and produces a 2% variation. Again, more output capacitance will help lower the voltage peaks and overshoots during a load transient since the peaks and overshoots are related to the capacitor equivalent series resistance (ESR). The next component to check is the output voltage ripple. As a DC/DC converter switches, the ripple will introduce a variation of the output voltage. The ripple is easily remedied by adding more output capacitance to lower the ESR. In this case, the voltage ripple adds ½% to the voltage accuracy. Once again, voltage accuracy is dependent on several factors. The best way to approach voltage accuracy is to find a device with the good performance in each category.
