When considering whether a DC/DC switching regulator has suitable voltage accuracy, a quick scan of the datasheet or the devices evaluation module can reveal its performance characteristics before the design is started. It is a good idea to inspect the regulator’s reference accuracy. Low reference accuracy means it will be more difficult for the regulator to meet the voltage requirement when considering the other aspects of the power design. Besides the reference voltage, the ripple voltage, resistor divider tolerance, and load transients can affect overall performance. Considering these metrics together can be complex, and the best way to approach voltage accuracy is to find a device with the good performance in each category.
