The voltage reference, as applied in data conversion, can be the single biggest factor affecting the accuracy of the system. An accurate reference allows them to determine input analog voltages with great accuracy. Adding more bits to the data converter increases the resolution of the measurement but does not affect the accuracy. For example, adding more divisions to an inaccurate ruler allows measurements to be stated more precisely, however it does not change the fact that it is still inaccurate. Using references with additional accuracy can greatly increase the accuracy of data converters.
