The three types of data converters are Successive Approximation, or SAR converters, Delta-Sigma converters, and Pipeline converters. SAR converters have traditionally been faster, and Delta-Sigma converters have offered higher resolution and signal quality. The advantage of SAR converters is their low sampling latency: a sample can be converted almost on demand. This is not the case with Delta-Sigma or pipeline converters which average signals and have higher latencies.
