One of the key drivers for the automotive industry is legislation. Although much of this legislation is only occurring in Europe currently, it is likely that this will have global impact. In order to reduce the level of pollution caused by road vehicles, the European Union has introduced legislation to put more stringent limits on pollutant emissions (Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards). The Euro 6 standard will take effect on September 1st 2014. It will require a substantial reduction in the emissions of hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx) from all vehicles equipped with a diesel engine. In addition, fuel consumption must be reduced to meet the growing demand for economical cars and to reduce environmental pollution caused by CO2 emissions. In modern automotive engines, the control unit (ECU) plays the crucial role of controlling and integrating different complex functions such as mixture formation, combustion, and exhaust gas treatment.
