Most inductors consist of a single wire of copper, copper-nickel alloy, or other conductive material wound into a coil, either with or without the use of ferromagnetic core materials. Air coil is the term used to describe an inductor or coil that operates without the advantage of magnetic core. Shown here are some examples of different styles of air coils.
