The STTS2002 was originally developed for DDR memory modules as part of the JEDEC committee which ST is a key contributor. The STS2002 is compliant for DDR3 memory, the built-in EEprom is used to store the serial presence detect (SPD) and vital product data (VPD). ST has found that many applications can take advantage of this type of device with the integrated temperature sensor + EEprom concept. The package is tiny and features are very compelling for any application which uses a temperature sensor and EEprom.
