Signal Transformers un-shielded SMD power inductors are typically lower cost and designed mainly for applications where high saturation currents are essential and magnetic flux field emission is not a primary concern. These un-shielded parts could radiate magnetic flux outside the inductor which may affect the functionality of sensitive components in close proximity. An inherent advantage of the un-shielded SMD’s over the shielded, other than the typical lower cost mentioned on this slide, is the more stable inductance over current and temperature rise. This is mainly due to the more favorable saturation characteristics resulting from a lower mass of ferrite material present in the device. The un-shielded SMD is the preferred choice as a high frequency filter component in applications where large current conditions are present and EMI is a secondary concern.
