Another important parameter in the selection process is the DCR, which stands for DC resistance. This parameter is the resistance of the inductor created by the length and diameter of magnet wire used for winding the inductor. The smaller the winding area, the finer the wire diameter is selected in order to achieve a specified inductance value. The finer the wire, the higher the resistance per given length. The higher the inductance, the longer the wire required to achieve this value. The DCR is a parameter which determines the power efficiency of the inductor. Typically the lower the DCR the better, since the power consumption increases with a higher DCR. The DCR is normally specified as maximum value.
