There are several families in the PIC18 J Series with integrated LCD drivers for applications such as meters, thermostats or security systems. All support direct drive capability, up to 192 segments, and a voltage boost controller for contrast control to compensate for dropping battery levels or different environmental conditions. The very popular PIC18F85J90 LCD family supports 8 to 32 KB Flash while the PIC18F87J90 family offers an extension up to 128KB Flash with more RAM, additional serial communications peripherals as well as an integrated CTMU for implementing cap touch buttons as well as a hardware Real Time Clock and calendar. The newest LCD family is the PIC18F87J93 which also features a 12-bit ADC. All of these LCD families are supported by the free segmented display designer GUI which is a graphical tool that allows customization of a display and automatic generation of the microcontroller code needed to drive the display.
