Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) 10 Base-T and 100 Base-T have a Basic level compliance test of 500V, 27.78A based on the 1.2/50-8/20µS combination wave generator, applied ±5 alternating polarities in a simultaneous common mode fashion. The Enhanced level increases the open circuit voltage to 1kV and the short circuit current to 55.55A for this same test. The sharing of induced surge events is seen for the 1000 Base-T test condition where the current per wire is reduced to 19.23A for the Basic level and 38.46A for the Enhanced level. These first three test conditions are applied without any primary protector connected. The next three test conditions are for Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) applications. Again, without any primary protector connected. The last test line is for a shielded USB protection. Please note that for the shielded twisted pair setup, all leads are connected to the shield prior to conducting this simultaneous common mode test. Obviously this interface cannot function with this connection, however, to comply, these interfaces must be fully functional after this surge testing.
