Design-Slide12

As one considers the bandwidth requirements of Ethernet, it has continued to increase as one progresses from 10 Base-T to 100 Base-T to 1000 Base-T to 10GbE. As this bandwidth increases, any additional loading on the wire pairs can reduce rate and reach capabilities of the Ethernet interface. A parallel capacitance or a common mode capacitance can cause impedance mismatches and distort the signaling eye to the point of causing data loss. Therefore, placing surge protection across the line or in a common mode arrangement, the designer must consider the impedance of the line. At higher frequency bands, this off-state capacitance of any surge protector must be sufficiently low so as not to cause signal distortion.
