Contact erosion, when the contact material itself is actually diminished, should be considered if arcing will occur, particularly if vaporized contact material condenses in the form of powder within the switching unit. Arcing may cause the failure of the contacts to separate, which is called welding and causes the switch to fail in reliably opening the circuit. The correct switch contacts are essential to prevent these problems.
