Several of the processors are now requiring a ratio-metric voltage matrix implementation with a guard band. Stated slightly differently, this means that the processor measures its environment; die temperature, clock speed, die voltages and the level of system utilization, and then dynamically changes the core voltage and memory voltage as needed. As can be seen in the chart on this slide, as the core voltage is modulated the memory voltage is also controlled within this guard band. This is specified to optimize the system performance per watt of utilization. Notice the degree of accuracy and resolution necessary to make this work properly, precision is assumed in this application.
