The Microchip SAMA5D3 is able to offer low-power numbers for its class of device. This enables fan-less design and offers new possibilities in the area of battery applications, including the rising area of wearable computing where one of the hot topics is smart watches. SAMA5D3 is unique in its ability to run sophisticated OS such as Linux, Android, or Windows while keeping power consumption low. One reason for this is that the SAMA5D3 is designed using a 65 nm low-power process technology and this is within the strict “low-power” flavor of this process. As a reference, most of the MPUs on the market are using ‘mixed-VT’ process technologies. This means that they are using a low-power process as a basis, but in order to increase performance (speed of the core and buses) they add faster transistors to the design. Unfortunately, the faster the transistor is, the more leakage it is having; therefore, higher consumption in low-power. Depending on how many fast transistors these manufacturers are adding in order to reach a target performance, it can significantly increase power consumption. Thanks to its low power numbers, customers using SAMA5D3 are even able to suppress a secondary flash MCU in their application that was only there to handle low power aspects.
