Secure communication along with protection of IP (intellectual property) and software are increasingly important in embedded applications. XMEGA has powerful onboard crypto engines that enable encrypted communication to be added easy and without impact on power consumption or communication rate. The crypto engine supports 128-bit AES where each 16-Byte clock is encrypted or decrypted in 375 clock cycles. Easy communication support through DMA and autostart of encryption and decryption further ensure high encryption and decryption rates. The 64-bit DES encryption and decryption of an 8-Byte block is done in only 16 clock cycles and triple-DES can easily be implemented by running the DES three times sequentially on the same data. This enables encrypted communication above 1 Mbps without impact on CPU usage, power consumption or software size. With XMEGA, fast and secure communication can easily be implemented everywhere, including low power applications areas. All AVR XMEGA devices with crypto engines are authorized for export without restrictions to all countries except Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, and Sudan (Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) 5A002A.1).
