Processors and ASSPs may be able to meet a given requirement. However, as more and more differentiating functions are added the processor becomes loaded particularly if there are other functions such as integrated communications, HMI etc., loading it. The animation on this slide depicts, more or less to scale, how compute time compares between microcontrollers and FPGAs as designers need to add more functionality or multiple axes of control. The Intel® MAX® 10 is a very special type of FPGA. Apart from standard FPGA resources one has come to expect, the Intel® MAX®10 provides several integrated features that enable motor-control designers to achieve more performance and functionality, while significantly saving on cost.
