The principle by which the heatsink works is not by primarily increasing area, but also by increasing the heat transfer by allowing more air to pass through the channels between the fins. The result as compared to folded fin or straight fin configurations is also a lessened pressure drop per unit volume. In the above screenshots from a CFD comparison, high speed airflow is shown in warmer colors, while low speed flow is shown in cool colors. Note that high speed flow appears between the fins of the maxiFLOW fin geometry.
