While users can determine the distance between the console and the KVM switch, the distance between the KVM switch and the server is determined by the specifications of the connector type. USB connections can support a maximum distance of 16 ft. (4.9 m). PS/2 connections can support a maximum distance of 25 ft. (7.6 m). Standard Cat 5 cabling (used with the appropriate USB, PS/2 or SUN Interface Module) can support a maximum distance of 150 ft. (45.7 m), depending on the KVM model. Users will require one USB, PS/2 or Cat 5 cable for each server connected to the KVM switch. While some Tripp Lite KVM switches include the required cables, most do not. Additionally, those KVM switches that use Cat 5 cabling require one Server Interface Unit (which feature either USB, PS/2 or SUN connectors) to connect each Cat 5 cable to a server.
