How far away from the KVM switch are the users located? Do any need remote access? This determines whether the users need local or remote access. The remote access needs of users are infinitely varied. Some users need the keyboard/monitor/mouse console and KVM switch located in the same room. If they connect to one’s own console, the distance is limited by the length of the cables. Select KVM switches integrate the console within the KVM switch for maximum convenience. Other users need the console and KVM switch located in separate sections of a facility or office campus. For example, the office where the console is located may be on a different floor than the server room where the KVM switch is located. Or they may want the console located in an unsecure area (such as on a factory floor) and the KVM switch located in a secure, climate-controlled area where the servers are located. In these scenarios, a console extender is recommended. The Console extender accepts standard Cat5 cabling to allow a console to be located up to 330 ft. (100.6 m) away from a KVM switch. Still other users need to control a KVM switch from across the country or across the globe. For longer distances, even on the other side of the globe, users can access the KVM via IP through existing network cabling and an IP adapter module (either sold separately or built into the KVM).
