Shown on this slide is the ultrasound system block diagram that was shown earlier in the presentation. Looking at the right, the embedded processing section is coming off the analog front end. DSPs are typically found in the mid-processing and back end processing blocks of the system. Some of the key algorithms customers implement on a DSP in the mid and back end include RF demodulation, B-mode or brightness mode, which is the black and white image commonly seen in an ultrasound image, and also color flow and Spectral Doppler, which are velocity, turbulence, and power estimation algorithms to overlay the blood flow. In system on chip type products which are used in portable ultrasound, both the DSP and an MPU are on the same silicon, and they can perform scan conversion, speckle noise reduction on the DSP while the MPU runs the full operating system, performs system control, and takes care of storage and display functions.
