In summary, the TI LM5017 is the industry’s first 100 V synchronous buck converter with integrated FETs. TI has manufactured constant on-time (COT) high-voltage devices for a number of years which required an external catch diode. The LM5017 has a more integrated solution that is fully synchronous, more efficient, smaller, and more user-friendly. Two FETs are integrated in the IC as well as a high-voltage, 100 V startup regulator that biases all internal circuitry. A COT device is similar to a hysteretic device except there is an added block referred to as an on-timer. The COT control circuit maintains regulation by triggering the non-resettable on-time, which turns on the high side FET when the output voltage decreases to the lower threshold. The output voltage rises during the on-time. When the timer expires, it will turn off the switch and the voltage will fall again. Some of the benefits of the COT solution are constant frequency control, lightning-fast transient response, no loop compensation required, and it is simple to design with.
