The LM3466 is a smart linear LED driver created to make designing multi-string LED lighting systems easy by automatically equalizing current through each LED string in a small, efficient solution. Lighting applications where high lumen output is required need multi-string LED arrays. Examples include outdoor area lighting like street or parking lot lighting as well as indoor fluorescent troffer and downlight replacement. The LM3466 uses a dynamic current equalization control scheme to automatically balance current through each LED string. Only one of them is used per LED string, with each LM3466 communicating via a simple communication bus. It can be as easy as connecting each of them via the COMM pin. Since the LM3466 ICs communicate with every other LM3466, each IC ensures that the system current is split equally through each LED string regardless of the number of strings or if the forward voltage of each LED string is matched. This guarantees that fixture brightness is consistent, even if string-to-string mismatches due to factors like binning or temperature shifts occur. The LM3466 is a linear regulator with an integrated MOSFET, which means that it is a very small, cost-effective solution. As shown in the diagram on this slide, it only requires one capacitor and one resistor. With its linear circuitry, the LM3466 does not introduce EMI into the system like a switching regulator might. By operating at minimum voltage overhead it can achieve up to 99% efficiency. With wide input operating voltage and LED current ranges, it also meets a broad range of application and platform needs.
