USB-to-Serial Bridge Implementation Using the TUSB3410 Slide 8

The MSP430 has been used for many applications such as “data logging” meters, etc. where customers want to get this information into the PC. Historically this has been accomplished via the UART port on the MSP430. However, with COM ports disappearing from newer PCs, the TUSB3410 is an ideal companion device to enable the MSP430 to talk to the TUSB3410 and its Virtual COM port software solution. The hardware implementation is very straight forward – connect the serial port of the MSP430 to the serial port of the TUSB3410. Install the TUSBWINVCP software as is on the PC and it is ready to go. Obviously for production, a customer will want to “customize” the VCP solution as described on the previous slides. The MSP430 can then talk to the PC-side user application like it always has – via the serial connection. The underlying USB transfers are transparent to both the PC-side application software as well as the MSP430 hardware. Some additional modifications can be made to tweak the MSP430-TUSB3410 hardware connections for a higher featured connection.
