The TCA6408A and TCA6416A are popular devices, which have been designed in an array of different applications. The devices have a wide VCC supply voltage range, from 1.65V to 5.5V on both the I²C and I/O side. This allows the devices to directly communicate with processors operating at the 1.8V nodes. In addition, the devices can do bi-directional voltage level translation between the core processor and the peripheral devices. This built-in voltage level translation eliminates the needs for external translators, thus saving on overall material cost, reducing required space, and providing easier management of the PCB. Also, with the different varieties of voltage nodes they are capable of translating from and to, they can easily interface with legacy as well as next-generation processors simply by changing the value of VCC.
