As can be seen in the illustration on this slide, the Human Body Model Test is exactly what it sounds like. The test simulates an ESD strike as if it had occurred through a human touch. Typical voltage value of the pulse is 2 kV (1,4,8 and 15 kV are also used). According to Wikipedia, “the human body model (HBM) is the most commonly used model for characterizing the susceptibility of an electronic device to damage from ESD. The model is a simulation of the discharge which might occur when a human touches an electronic device”.
