In addition to the two major wire termination types, screw and spring, there are also other styles which are less common but have their own niche in different applications. For example there are standard eurostyle type housings which mate to standard headers however they utilizes a crimp style contact. One may desire to use this type of connection to terminate discrete wires inside a factory, but there is also a requirement for easy replacement utilizing a field wireable interface connector. Another reason one might want to use a crimp style product is for high volume wire termination. Contacts on strip form may be terminated on automated bench top machinery. Insulation displacement contacts have also been integrated into the eurostyle terminal block family. One such example is shown in this slide. This version in particular does not require any tool whatsoever to make the wire termination, thus saving the installer time and money. Other insulation displacement style terminal blocks may require a tool for termination, but they never require the added step of prepping the wire by stripping the insulation off.
