The terminal block description “eurostyle” means different things for different people. For the purposes of this training, eurostyle terminal block will be defined as a terminal block which is insulated within an IP20 touch safe housing, that provides a means to connect discrete wires to a printed circuit board. There are literally hundreds of styles of terminal blocks just within the eurostyle segment alone. Knowing just what kind of product fits an application best can be a difficult challenge if the designer is not familiar with the basic choices, and what their intended usage is. There are really two main choices or criteria to be familiar with. The first is the method of wire termination that the block provides. The second is the configuration or the way the termination is packaged. Wire termination can be accomplished by using a screw in either a rising cage (cage clamp or elevator clamp) or a wire protector style. Other common wire termination methods include: various spring styles, insulation displacement, and crimp contacts. The configurations available are considerably broader, but at a high level, the choice consists of either one piece, or two piece pluggable; how many levels of connections; the wire entry angle and orientation; as well as other features such as locking or modular versions.
