Standard AMPLIMITE D-sub connectors come in three housing styles: all plastic, metal shell and front metal shell. The all plastic style is available with right angle or straight posted contacts and is used in applications where electrical continuity through the shells and/or to the PCB for ground purposes and shielding is not required. On the other hand, metal shell and front metal shell styles provide additional ruggedness, electrical continuity through the shells and/or to the PCB for grounding purposes, and EMI/RFI shielding capability when appropriate backshell hardware is used in conjunction with cable connectors.
