Conventional IR proximity sensors in the market use IR LEDs to measure how much light is reflected back from an object. An estimated range is made because light signal strength fades over distance. This method is inaccurate, because it does not account for changes in reflectivity due to color. As an example the slide shown here illustrates that with the conventional IR technology the dark hair does not set off the distance requirement to turn the touch screen off whereas the lighter skin on the ear would. This can result in the screen turning on and off causing an accidental touch. The VL6180X gives more accurate distance information regardless of the object color and the amount of reflected signal.
