Below is a typical application schematic showing not only the VL6180X but necessary passives, LDO’s for power input and optional devices such as ESD protection. The VL6180X outputs are open drain meaning they require pull ups. The VL6180X requires two capacitors, a 100 nF and a 4.7 µF capacitor. The recommended power supply is 2.8 V. The 120M28R device is a recommended ST part for a stable 2.8 V operation. The VL6180X I²C requires pull-ups, and can be either 1.8 V or 2.8 V operation. ST recommends a stable 1.8 V supply for the pull-ups. Optional devices are ESD protection chip, the ESDA6V1-5P6, on I²C lines, as well as GPIO outputs. If the HOST system requires operation above 2.8 V, ST recommends using a level shifter on I²C or GPIO pins as the device cannot be powered higher than 3 V.
